How to color objects in Maya.

Step 1 Create an object. Make sure you have it filled so you can see what you’re doing by hitting the #5 key. You can also zoom in on your object by hitting the F key while you have the object selected. This will help you to be able to view your object better.

Step 2 Open Hypershade. You can find this by going to Window > Rendering Editors > Hypershade

Step 3 Now that you’re in the Hypershade menu click on the icon called Lambert. That will create a new Lambert. Now you should see it appear in the materials section and the work area. You can double click that Lambert in either spot and it’ll open up a menu to be able to edit that Lambert.

Step 4 Now in this menu you can change the name to what ever you want (ex red, yellow, blue, navy_blue) Now go down to where it says color and double click on the color swatch that is there. I’ll open up a color chooser and you can choose / create the color that you want. Once you got the color close the color chooser.

Step 4.1 If you want to close the Lambert menu on the top right corner of Maya there is a button right on top of that little trash can that will bring you back to the channels palette. Other wise you can use the hot key (ctrl+A)

Step 5 Now to color in the object that you had created earlier with the new Lambert that you had created. There are 3 different ways you can do this you can either right click on the object and then go down to Materials > Assign Existing Material > and then the Lambert you made. The other way you can color this object is by using the hypershade menu. You can click and drag the Lambert onto the object with the middle mouse click button, or you can right click on the Lambert and assign it to the selected object.
