Step 1 Find an image whether it’s a jpeg or tiff. These are the recommended formats for images that are going to be brought into Maya.
Step 2 Open Maya and create a Nurbs Plane by going to Create > Nurbs Primitives > Plane. Then either hit the F key to zoom into that plane or use the R key to resize the plane. Once the plane is created hit the #5 key so you can see the filled in version of the object.

Step 3 Go to the hypershade menu by going to Window > Rendering Editors > Hypershade. Once your in the Hypershade menu click on the lambert and double click on the new Lambert that appears in the materials section or the work area to open up that Lambert’s options.

Step 4 Now you can name your Lambert what ever you would like. Then go down to where it says color and click on that black and white checked box to the right of color. This will open the Create Render Node box.

Step 5 First make sure your Render Node box is set to normal and not projection. Then in the 2d section click the button that says File. After you click that you should see a new menu appear in place of the Lambert one on the right of the screen.

Step 6 Down where it says image click on the icon to the right of it http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r285/Powerblaster/Inserting%20Photos%20into%20Maya/Picture7.jpg. Then another new menu should appear. In this menu go down to where it says “Image Name” and then click the folder icon to browse for your image. Once you find your image that Lambert it set.

Step 7 Now all you have to do is color in your Plane with your image and your all set.
